Mr. Correa used to be a film critic for newspaper Correio da Manhã, magazines Manchete and F&F Gente, BBC External Services and Brazilian TV Educativa, where he hosted the program ‘Cadenros de cinema.’ In this booklet he briefly outlines both ontological and filmological (ie expressive) cinematic capabilities, naming thousands of movies he had the opportunity to watch and occasionally criticize, from the 1940s into the 2000s. His notions do not deny the industry’s characteristic utilitarianism, which nevertheless is something alien to pure creation. Correa always agreed with Walter Benjamin as to reproduction techniques conditioning and supporting the very mode of production. If for the general public movies are a mere hobby, for the critic they are a vital, sometimes creative activitiy of a consequential nature.
