To the world, Rio de Janeiro is the quintessential image of Brazil: golden beaches, vibrant carnival, and the imposing silhouette of Christ the Redeemer. This is the paradise facade celebrated globally. However, for those who live within its depths, Rio is also a territory of brutal contrasts, where the spectacular beauty of the landscape serves only to accentuate the social tragedy of its communities.

This book proposes to strip away the glamour to analyze the raw reality of the fluminense capital: the Drug War and the consolidation of a Parallel Power that operates on the margin, and often in direct confrontation, with the State.

Urban violence in Rio is not a random phenomenon. It is the predictable and catastrophic result of decades of state abandonment, abyssal inequality, and the failure of public security. It is a conflict that unfolds on three main fronts:

1. Organized Drug Trafficking (The Comandos): The factions that control the illicit economy, heavy weaponry, and strategic territories within the favelas.

2. The State and its Security Forces: The militarized police, high-risk operations, and the contradictions between the duty to protect and the practice of violence.

3. The Militias (The New Enemy): Groups of criminals who emerged as “vigilantes” but now extort residents and monopolize essential services, becoming an even more deeply rooted and political criminal structure.

Rio Sangrento is an anatomy of this war. We will explore how the favelas, born from spontaneous occupation and migration, became the central stage for this parallel power.
