Surprised, I was invited to present an e-book of poems and photos about invertebrates (animals without spine). That is because I am not a writer: since 2006, I lecture the subject that deals with these living beings at the University. It is gratifying to see these animals exalted in verse and prose. Although they represent more than 70% of the biodiversity, they have not received the proper attention of the arts in general, despite their beauty and unique biological importance, shapes, colors and behavior. Unfortunately, for many people, the beings that this INvertebral poetry deals with do not have the elegance of horses, the exuberance of eagles, the friendliness of dogs, cats and fish, nor do they bring the fear we devote to snakes. As a Zoology lecturer, I foresee here a number of playful possibilities for bringing literature / music / photography closer to the scientific knowledge, either by introducing a subject or by illustrating or exemplifying a group of invertebrates. In pleasant texts, the authors of Poesia Animal! [Animal Poetry! – Editora UFMS/Sterna, 2003] were careful to encompass a great diversity of groups, habits and life forms, bringing to the place of poetry from the most famous to the almost unknown or forgotten beings that inhabit the ocean depths, caves and intestinal hiddenness! And since many of these invertebrates are present in homes, cuisine and culture, the non-biologist reader will also identify himself with this unique work.
