A performance do samba batucado:: sua adaptação para bateria

Abstract: This book is an adaptation of an author’s master’s research that aims to theoretically discuss the process of adapting rhythmic patterns, timbral and articulation modes of the typical percussion instruments of the samba to drums and to present practical examples of these adaptations, highlighting the possibilities of performance in the battery generated by the combinations of riffs of the percussion instruments. Along with the specific bibliographical shortage regarding the subject, in this study we opted for a discussion based on the following questions: (a) what are the different forms of the adaptation process for the battery? (b) what are the limitations of the drummer to make these adaptations? and (c) how can we expand this adaptive capacity? Based on these questions, we aim to establish a function analysis for the rhythm patterns of the percussion instruments in order to ameliorate these gaps and propose an amplification of the process of adaptation of the battery using: (1) different percussion accessories that can be attached to the battery; (2) non-traditional techniques for the instrument based on the articulation patterns of the percussion instruments; (3) adaptations of riffs with three rhythmic functions (question and answer, conduction and marking), typical of percussion instruments; (4) adaptations of leads with question and response function superimposed on the battery and (5) the deaf box as an important tool for the adaptation process. Through these procedures, we seek to generate leads to drums in the samba that are most appropriate for the performer who acts without the accompaniment of other percussionists, being responsible for meeting the expectations of the typical sonority of the missing percussion instruments.
