A collection of essays and articles spanning from the inception of the Bric concept, at the table of a professional economist from an investments bank, in early 2000s, up to the situation in 2022, after the invasion of Ukraine by one of Brics members, Russia. Most of the analysis is of a historical nature, dealing with economic and diplomatic aspects of the endeavor, and focusing especially on Brazil’s interests, inducements, and capabilities, as one of the first proponents of the group, and the initial letter of the appealing acronym. By its title, The Great Illusion of the Brics, there is a clear critical standpoint about the reasons and motivations for the creation of this group, as if the four original members seek to be countering the G7 and looking to offer an alternative world order. As revealed by the subtitle, a parallel universe of the Brazilian diplomacy, there is also a discussion about a kind of a new driving line in Brazilian foreign policy, deviating from its traditional patterns towards the building up of an autonomous stance in regional and international relations, connecting its diplomacy essentially with its national interests of social and economic development.
